Get ‘merry’ in moderation this festive season

16 December 2008

Being merry is one thing, but being responsible when out drinking is an important step in making sure your festive season finishes on a good note.

That’s the message Armidale Hospital Emergency Department in partnership with the Armidale Liquor Accord are sending all party-goers this Christmas.

The Armidale Hospital Emergency Department Nursing Manager Robyn O’Brien said having a plan is the way to go.

“Christmas and New Year parties are a great way of getting together with family and friends for a catch-up over a drink,” Ms O’Brien said.

“Unfortunately during the festive season the Armidale Hospital Emergency Department tends to see a boom in presentations related to alcohol abuse.

“Last year the emergency department treated one person per day who was injured or ill as a direct result of excessive alcohol consumption.

“People who are intoxicated are also at a high risk of physical and sexual assault and robbery – so it’s worth taking some simple steps to stay safe.

“The best way to avoid a trip to the emergency department is to plan your night, including how you’re going to get home.”

The message this festive season is simple:
• Learn to recognise when you’ve had enough alcohol.
• Have a glass of water, juice or soft drink between alcoholic drinks.
• Remember, one drink may contain more than one standard unit of alcohol.
• Avoid topping drinks up – you may lose count of how many you’ve had.
• Plan to catch public transport or have a designated driver.
• Enjoy a meal with your drinks.
• Don’t accept drinks from someone you don’t know or trust.

Planning your night out will ensure that everyone is safe and has an enjoyable time, without the visit to the emergency department.
