Appointment of Nurse Manager at Inverell

15 December 2008

Hunter New England Health wishes to advise the community of the formal appointment of Katherine Randall as the Nurse Manager (NM) at Inverell District Hospital.

Mrs Randall has been Acting NM at Inverell District Hospital since March this year, and was formerly Clinical Services Manager.

McIntyre Cluster General Manager Lynne Shands said Mrs Randall’s appointment was positive news for the Inverell community.

“Kath is a seasoned health professional with a wide-ranging experience in hands-on clinical work, which provides a strong support for the transition into management,” Ms Shands said.

“The appointment of a permanent Nurse Manager will provide the level of stability required to lead the hospital and enable a planned approach to service provision and activity in the future.”

Inverell born and raised, Kath began her training as a Registered Nurse at the University of New England in 1995.

Soon after she was one of a select few chosen to undergo the Rural Midwifery Program through Wagga Wagga’s Charles Sturt University. The program enabled her to receive hands-on experience in maternity units at Inverell, Moree, Glen Innes, Armidale and Tamworth.

Kath ventured overseas to work in the United Kingdom for a number of years, fulfilling roles in various fields of nursing including cardiology and acute medical assessment. She took on a management position during her time abroad, a move which fuelled a desire to further expand her managerial skills.

She returned to a permanent position at Inverell District Hospital in 2006, then relieved as Nurse Unit Manager for both the Surgical Services Unit and Medical Ward. She was later appointed the hospital’s Clinical Services Manager.

“Within a management role, not only can I help patients, I can also assist nurses and other team members to improve systems and models of care – this means staff can perform their roles better, which ultimately helps patients have improved journeys and outcomes,” Mrs Randall said.

Kath says she enjoys the challenges of developing staff skills and knowledge, and liaising with the community to help meet their needs.

“Inverell District Hospital has a wonderful clinical and non-clinical team which has always worked well together – there is a true sense of family throughout all levels of the hospital which adds to the sense of pride and dedication staff feel.

“I am looking forward to meeting the challenges this new role will entail. I hope I can draw upon my intimate knowledge of the local resources and history of the facility to provide Inverell Hospital with not only the management it requires, but also the leadership it deserves.”
