Long term volunteer's fifty years of service

Fifty years is a long time to work hard for the health of others. What makes it more special is doing it for free.

Volunteer Daisy Burrows has been recognised by NSW Minister for Health Jillian Skinner and Member for Swansea Garry Edwards for devoting 50 years of service to Belmont Hospital.

The minister and local member joined staff at Belmont Hospital to honour Daisy for her significant contribution to the hospital over the last half century.

Belmont Hospital General Manager Debbie Bradley says the value of volunteering is immense.

“Daisy is part of a great team of volunteers who bring real heart to our service and we were pleased to be part of her big surprise,” she said.

Daisy says she couldn’t have been more surprised.

“It was absolutely lovely to be presented with flowers and a certificate,” she said.

“When I started working at Belmont Hospital in 1961 I didn’t think about being honoured down the track – I just wanted to get the work done.”

Daisy has worked in the hospital kiosk and has organised fetes and cake stalls to raise money for the treatment of others.

She says volunteering brings its own rewards.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time with the staff and has given me friendships that will last forever,” she said.

Member for Swansea Garry Edwards says he was honoured to be part of Daisy’s day.

“It was fantastic to take the time to celebrate the unsung heroes of our local hospital.

“Daisy is an example of a community member who strives to better the lives of those around her and deserves to be praised,” Mr Edwards said.
