FIRST DAY ON THE JOB FOR JUNIOR MEDICAL OFFICERS

Friday 7 January 2011

Ninety (90) new graduates will begin their careers in health service sites across the Hunter New England Local Health Network region next week, for their first year of supervised training as doctors.

These new recruits - Junior Medical Officers (JMOs) - will undertake their week of formal orientation at Tamworth and John Hunter Hospitals and will participate in local site orientation at rural and metropolitan sites throughout the Hunter New England Local Health Network (LHN).

Manager of the Hunter New England Local Health Network JMO Unit, Jeanette Chadban, said the doctors would participate in a series of workshops and seminars to introduce the group to hospital procedures and staff.

“Next week (10 January) we welcome an enthusiastic group of young doctors who have chosen to work and train at Hunter New England Health’s wide network of public hospitals,” she said.

“Hunter New England Health has a strong reputation for offering high quality training and development programs for graduates and junior medical officers, and this reputation is reflected in the strong number of JMO recruits we have attracted for 2011.”

Orientation workshops cover topics such as ward etiquette, patient safety, admissions and discharges as well as a series of presentations across hospital departments, including pathology and pharmacy.

Ms Chadban said the JMO program would also incorporate seminars from a variety of Hunter New England LHN training units.

“The JMO program showcases the superb skill set of our specialists as well as programs developed by Hunter New England LHN skills’ laboratories area-wide,” she said.

“Hunter New England LHN provides an ideal training ground for doctors, with a mix of metropolitan settings and rural centres,” Ms Chadban said.

“We have some of the best senior clinicians in the state within our Local Health Network who will share their experiences and expertise with our aspiring junior doctors.

“We welcome this year’s cohort to the Hunter New England LHN team and wish them well for their training.”

Hunter-based JMOs will rotate through the Hunter New England Local Health Network JMO network, which includes John Hunter Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle, Belmont Hospital, The Royal Newcastle Centre, James Fletcher Hospital, Maitland Hospital, Manning Hospital in Taree, Armidale Hospital and Tamworth Hospital.
