Special day helps Glen Innes mums look after themselves

31 October 2011

Having a baby can be an enjoyable time of life for new mums, but it can also be a time of sleepless nights and stress.

That’s why Glen Innes Community Health is holding a Mum’s Time Out event on Tuesday 8 November, where new mums can come together to get some hair and make-up tips and learn how to create and write a journal before the day finishes up with a ‘prams in the park’ walk.

Health professionals will also be on-hand to discuss issues relevant to new mothers and mothers-to-be, such as postnatal depression, self care, gestational diabetes and routine screening.

The special day is being held to raise awareness about postnatal depression, as part of Postnatal Depression Awareness Week (13-19 November).

Child and Family Health Nurse Julie Hillard said it was important new mums know how to look after their health, both physically and mentally.

“Postnatal depression is a depression that occurs in the first year after the birth of a child and affects around one in seven new mothers,” Julie said.

“Rural women in communities such as Glen Innes, can be more susceptible to feelings of isolation, so it is important mums learn how to remain aware of their own feelings and emotions during pregnancy and after birth, so they can look after themselves and their baby.

“Days like Mum’s Time Out give new mothers some practical tips to help them keep well and to also meet health professionals who can assist if new mothers feel they need some extra help.”

The special day will be held from 10am on Tuesday 8 November, at Glen Innes Community Health. Morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Please note, places are limited and priority will be given to mothers with babies under the age of six months, and pregnant women over 24 weeks.

To book, please contact Mental Health Social Worker Anne Edwards or Child and Family Health Nurse Julie Hillard on (02) 6739 0100.
