Invest in your life - Mental Health Month
6 October 2011
Mental health is about much more than whether you have symptoms of mental illness or not.
It is a state of wellbeing in which we can realise our abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and make a contribution to our communities.
Mental Health Month provides an opportunity to take stock and invest in our wellbeing, says senior mental health promotion officer with Hunter New England Mental Health Services, Dr Alan Avery.
The theme this year is “Wellbeing: invest in your life”.
“Mental health is often referred to as social and emotional wellbeing but Mental Health Month encourages us to take a holistic view of our health,” Dr Avery said.
“Our overall wellbeing can encompass not just our mental health but also our physical, social and spiritual health.
“Mental Health Month is an opportunity for people to make a positive change in their lives in one or more of these areas,” he said. “We want to encourage everyone to consider how they can improve their own and others’ mental health.
“Many Australians take the time to invest and plan for their financial future and security, but how often do we pause to really consider and invest in our health and wellbeing?”
October affords plenty of opportunities to do just that and to reach out and participate in the many activities and events that are planned throughout the Hunter New England health district. A calendar of community events is available.
