Memories through food

People who have been touched by cancer are being invited to contribute special family recipes to a fund raising project for local cancer support services.

Narrabri Palliative Care Nurses and local cancer support groups are creating a small book, ‘Memories through Food’ as a dedication to the families and carers of people who have died of the illness.

Narrabri Palliative Care Nurse, Judy Michell, says almost everyone knows someone who has had cancer or a life limiting illness.

“It’s not easy to remember those who have passed but we hope the book will be a help to those who have gone through the palliative care experience.

“Recipes can include cakes, slices, meals, jams, relishes or craft ideas or even tips that helped make the person more comfortable during their illness,” she said.

Ms Michell says the book will also include short stories about the people connected to the recipes.

“The stories will highlight that these people had lives beyond their cancer.”

All proceeds from sales of the book will go to Narrabri Cancer Support and Can Assist groups to continue their work in the community.

The groups raise funds to support cancer and palliative care patients with financial help for medication, travel and hire of medical equipment.

It is hoped the book will be ready by the middle of November in time for Christmas.
