New group for Partners in Depression
8 February 2011
Carers and loved ones are often the forgotten allies in the battle against depression - but support is available for people in the Manning Valley, Gloucester and Forster areas.
Partners in Depression is a group program to help support those who support someone with depression.
The latest group program is starting later this month and people can register their interest now.
Partners in Depression is a six-week group program to address the information and support needs of families and friends of people experiencing depression.
It is being run by qualified trainers from Hunter New England Health starting on Tuesday 22 February 2011, and will run each Thursday for six weeks from 6pm to 8pm at the Taree Community Health Centre.
Group facilitator and health worker with Hunter New England Mental Health in Manning Judy Yarrington said the free program will provide a forum where participants can receive information and ask questions about depression and the support role.
Partners in Depression is an evidence-based educational group program developed by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health, a non-profit business unit of Hunter New England Health, and with major funding support from the nib foundation.
Developed locally, Partners in Depression is being rolled out nationally and has already attracted strong support, including from national patron Mrs Lucy Brogden, wife of the former NSW Opposition leader John Brogden.
“Research has shown that carers and loved ones of people experiencing depression can themselves be at risk of having depression, anxiety and stress,” said Judy, who helped facilitate two Partners groups last year.
“Often all the focus is on the person experiencing depression and those who are providing the love and care and support are forgotten in the process. Sometimes the carers forget to take the time to care for themselves, and some people aren’t sure how they can do that or know where to go for help.
“That is where Partners in Depression can assist.
“We would urge anyone in the Mid North Coast area who is caring for someone experiencing depression to register their interest by contacting the Community Health Centre on 6592 9315.”
