The University of New England has appointed Dr Elizabeth Cotterell to the position of Associate Professor in Paediatrics in the University’s School of Rural Medicine.  The appointment is a collaboration between UNE and Hunter New England Health.

Dr Cotterell will also take up a VMO Paediatrician position at Armidale Hospital. The appointment is a joint collaboration between the University of New England and Hunter New England Health.

‘This senior appointment further demonstrates the commitment between UNE and Armidale Hospital to further support the Joint Medical Program, a collaboration program between the University of New England, University of Newcastle, Hunter New England Health and Northern Sydney Central Coast Health’, said Professor Minichiello.

’Dr Cotterell will be making important teaching contributions into the Joint Medical Program and contribute to the research agenda of the School of Rural Medicine.  In addition it will allow our students to access a clinician with a high commitment to medical training and clinical service delivery in the field of paediatrics’.

Dr Cotterell has an impressive clinical and teaching record.  Her clinical work includes being a paediatric emergency physician and staff specialist in the Emergency Department at Sydney Children’s Hospital.   She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics) and gained sub-speciality accreditation a Paediatric Emergency Medicine.  She was also a Paediatric Emergency Fellow at the Hospitals for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.  In addition she holds a Master of Public Health.

Dr Cotterell brings with her teaching experience from the University of New South Wales where she taught in the undergraduate medical program.  Her research interests include peadiatric acute asthma management, emergency management of paediatric status epilepticus and child and parent satisfaction with the use of spacer devicers in acute asthma.

Hunter New England Health Chief Executive Dr Nigel Lyons said the appointment of Dr Cotterell was an important step forward for Armidale’s specialist medical services and the Joint Medical Program.

“Dr Cotterell will be joining long-standing Armidale based VMO Paediatricians Dr Keith Power and Dr Catherine Wiles to provide an expanded service to the more than 700 children who are admitted to the hospital each year,” Dr Lyons said.

“She will also be a valued member of the Joint Medical Program, ensuring our future doctors are prepared for the many facets and challenges of rural medicine. We are pleased Hunter New England Health’s partnership with the School of Rural Medicine (within the Joint Medical Program) is allowing us to consistently attract high-calibre staff to the region.”
