Eating disorder support group now in Tamworth

12 October 2010

Carers of people with eating disorders can now come together for support and education.

A support group is being established in Tamworth this month by The Butterfly Foundation, a national charity that provides support for Australians who suffer from eating disorders and negative body image issues and their carers.

The Butterfly Foundation is piloting a range of support systems and resources in Tamworth, and recently appointed Tamworth Hospital dietitian Sally Moy as the Foundation’s project officer.

Ms Moy said the establishment of the support group was a great first step in bringing people together to talk about their experiences with eating disorders.

“Support groups provide an opportunity for carers to come together and meet with others who share similar experiences,” Ms Moy said.

“The support group aims to provide a non-judgemental, supportive environment for people to share experiences and coping skills.

“We aim to reduce isolation and promote empowerment to take positive steps towards recovery.

“If you have a loved one or friend who is suffering from an eating disorder and you would like some support, or to hear the experiences of others, please come along.”

The support group in Tamworth will run on the second Tuesday of the month beginning tonight 12 October (then Tuesday 9 November and Tuesday 14 December). The group will meet at Tamworth Community Centre, Darling St, Tamworth (School Room) between 7pm and 8.30pm.

To register your attendance or for further information regarding this group please contact the Butterfly Foundation’s Tamworth representative Sally Moy on (02) 6767 8440.
