New nurses kick-start careers at HNE Health

1 February 2010

Hunter New England Health’s reputation for providing first-class skill development and support to its nurses has attracted a record number of new nurse graduates to the Area in 2010.

This year, 162 registered nurses have accepted jobs in hospitals and health services across the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid-North Coast regions - boosting Hunter New England Health’s nursing capability.

Hunter New England Health’s Director of Nursing and Midwifery Chris Kewley said the bumper recruitment was achieved due to the health service’s ability to provide graduates with the necessary support and supervision during their first year out of university.

“This year we are very pleased to be welcoming 162 new graduate nurses who will begin their careers with us,” Mr Kewley said.

“They will start orientation in our services during the next two weeks, so they can become familiar with their hospital and the staff who will play an integral part in their education and development in the coming year.

“Most of the nurses will rotate through different wards and services during the year, to give them a chance to learn what kind of nursing they’re interested in.

“Nurses can sign up with us knowing they have the opportunity to work in a broad range of clinical settings and communities.

“We go to a lot of effort to make sure their first year on the job is as enjoyable as possible, so it’s great to see our work is paying off of each year,” Mr Kewley said.
