Drowning risk increases during floods

Hunter New England Health is warning parents living in the region in areas affected by flooding to keep children away from flood waters.

Health Services Functional Area Coordinator Chris Kewley said it is important that parents ensure their children are not playing in flood prone waterways, watercourses and drains during the current floods.

“No matter how innocent flood waters may look children should not be allowed to play in these areas,” Mr Kewley said.

“Flood waters can rise rapidly and children could quickly become at risk of drowning.

“Drowning is the second most common cause of death in children under the age 14, making up nearly 20  per cent of all injury related deaths in children,” he said.

“This risk is heightened when areas are affected by flooding so it is important that parents remain vigilant during these times.

“This warning is not just for children. No matter how well you can swim, everyone should also avoid entering flooded roads, creeks and watercourses.
“In periods of heavy rainfall, crossing roadways, either in vehicles or on foot, can become extremely hazardous as water levels can rise and fall quickly,” Mr Kewley said.
“Unless it is absolutely essential we would ask people to avoid entering flooded areas.”
