Boost for stroke services at Manning Hospital

Stroke patients from the Lower Mid North Coast area will benefit from the recent appointment of a Stroke Coordinator to Manning Hospital.

 

Working collaboratively, Manning Stroke Working Party and the Hunter Stroke Service identified that a Stroke Coordinator was required to enhance stroke treatment and management in the Lower Mid North Coast area.

 

The position will improve patient outcomes by providing multidisciplinary education, enhanced coordination of care and ensuring practice is consistent with the National Stroke Guidelines.  

 

Manning Hospital annually treats over 150 patients who have suffered a stroke and this additional position will play an important role in providing the best possible services to these people.

 

Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Manning Hospital, Inga Kasch said the main aims of the role are to standardise care consistent with the best available evidence for stroke patients and to educate staff and the community about stroke symptoms, treatment and rehabilitation.

 

“The role will help achieve best patient outcomes in hospital and also in a return to optimal health once the patient is discharged,” said Ms Kasch

 

“With ongoing monitoring of best practices we will be able to achieve this by ensuring care is based on best clinical guidelines in acute stroke care, rehabilitation and education.

 

“This role will coordinate patients, family, carers, hospital staff, allied health staff and community groups to work together to achieve high quality care and outcomes for all people affected by stroke.

 

“We are very pleased to have a Stroke Coordinator role for Manning Hospital and look forward to enhancing our service to the community,” said Ms Kasch.
