Aboriginal women’s fitness program now in Guyra
20 May 2010
Aboriginal women in Guyra now have a new place to come together, make friendships and learn about keeping up a healthy lifestyle.
The nine-week Guyra Aboriginal Women and Antenatal Fitness Program began at Guyra Multi Purpose Service in April and will run until 25 June 2010. New members are always welcome to come along.
The participants meet twice a week to learn about general health topics like healthy diet and smoking as well as topics to do with pregnancy, such as birth, breast feeding and post-natal care for mothers and babies.
Fitness instructor for the program Melissa Way said the course was a good way to learn more about well-being while meeting other women who are interested in maintaining their health.
“This is a great opportunity for Aboriginal women to come together and learn about their health while building friendships and connections in Guyra,” Melissa said.
“We also do some light exercise during the sessions, to teach women how they can stay active, particularly during or after pregnancy. It’s important women know how to exercise the right way, to recover well after birth. Exercising reduces the risk of antenatal and post-natal problems and can be good for newborn babies.
“The best aspect of the day is getting together with other women to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.”
The program is being run by local Guyra staff including Aboriginal Liaison Officer Katie Lockwood and Fitness Instructor Melissa Way in collaboration with the Aboriginal Mothers and Babies team and the New England Division of General Practice.
