Oncology clinics resume at Muswellbrook
25 March 2010
Hunter New England Health is pleased to announce that a regular oncology clinic has resumed at Muswellbrook District Hospital.
The first monthly oncology clinic was held on 24 February, with 10 local patients receiving the support and medical expertise of Dr Mathew George.
Dr George was appointed as the full-time medical oncologist at Tamworth Hospital Oncology Unit in November last year. Along with Muswellbrook, Dr George is hopeful that outreach services might be provided to other parts of the Area Health Service over time.
Registered Nurse at Muswellbrook District Health Service, Tracey Leatherday, said Dr George’s visits to Muswellbrook ensure continuity of care, which is really important for people during their cancer journey.
“Dr George brings with him a wealth of experience and an understanding of the needs and challenges faced by rural cancer patients, so he is a much-welcomed addition to our team,” Ms Leatherday said.
“We are very happy to be able to offer this monthly service to the local community, reducing the need for patients and their families to travel.”
The date of the next Muswellbrook oncology clinic is Monday 29 March.
Dr George said he was pleased to be able to extend his expertise to communities such as Muswellbrook.
“Bringing services closer to people’s homes reduces the costs and discomfort associated with travel; anything we can do to make a patient’s cancer journey easier is a step in the right direction,” Dr George said.
