Help available for Parnters in Depression - Armidale
5 July 2010
Carers and loved ones are often the forgotten allies in the battle against depression - but support is now at hand for those in the Armidale area.
Partners in Depression is a new group program to help support those who support someone with depression.
The program is starting shortly and people can register their interest now.
Partners in Depression is a six-week group program to address the information and support needs of families and friends of people experiencing depression.
It will be run by qualified trainers from Hunter New England Health starting on Friday 6 August 2010, and will run each Friday for six weeks from 10am to 12pm.
Facilitator and Family and Carer Project Worker with Hunter New England Mental Health Claire Priestley said the free program will provide a forum where participants can receive information and ask questions about depression and the support role.
“This and a similar program being run in Glen Innes are the first of what we hope will be many programs run across the New England and North-West region,” Claire said.
Partners in Depression is an evidence-based educational group program developed by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health, a non-profit business unit of Hunter New England Health, and with major funding support from the nib foundation.
Developed locally, Partners in Depression is being rolled out nationally over the next few years and has attracted strong support, including from national patron Mrs Lucy Brogden, wife of the former NSW Opposition leader John Brogden.
“Research has shown that carers and loved ones of people experiencing depression can themselves be at risk of having depression, anxiety and stress,” said Claire who with fellow facilitator and health worker Alan Avery have been trained to deliver the program.
“Often all the focus is on the person experiencing depression and those who are providing the love and care and support are forgotten in the process. Sometimes the carers forget to take the time to care for themselves, and some people aren’t sure how they can do that or know where to go for help.
“That is where Partners in Depression can assist.
“We would urge anyone in the Armidale area who is caring for someone experiencing depression to call us and register their interest. You can telephone me on 6767 7970
“If you feel you are unable to attend because of childcare or other issues, please still call us and we may be able to help you find a solution that could help.”
