Army of volunteers to give Moree Hospital grounds 'the big lift'

6 July 2010

A team of volunteers converged on Moree District Health Service on Tuesday 6 July 2010 to undertake a large landscaping project to beautify the grounds of the health service.

Thirty-six students who belong to a volunteer group from the University of Technology in Sydney known as ‘The Big Lift’ will arrive in Moree to assist with the project.

“We recognised that some of the grounds around the Community Health building could do with some beautification to make the area more welcoming for both patients and staff,” Moree Community Health Manager Connie Minos said.

“We wanted the physical environment to reflect the high regard we hold for our community and to enable us to provide a relaxing, enjoyable and welcoming garden environment for patients, their families and other visitors,” Connie said.

“So when we were offered the opportunity to utilise the services of The Big Lift volunteer group, we jumped at the chance,” she said.

The volunteers will assist with preparing garden beds, wheel barrowing topsoil, planting gardens and painting part of a weatherboard building over a four-hour period in seven areas of the health service grounds.

“We’re very grateful to everyone who is volunteering their time and effort to take part in this project,” Connie said.

“It will go a long way to providing a more welcoming and relaxing environment for our patients, clients and visitors.

“A number of important health services are provided from these buildings and there are clear benefits in a therapeutic environment for improving the health of patients and clients.”
