Walcha – stick to one New Year’s resolution this year
29 December 2009
New Year’s resolutions are tough to stick to but the Peel Community Forum on Health is urging Walcha residents to make one resolution that’s easy to keep in 2010.
Walcha resident and member of the Forum Shirley Davison is asking every Walcha resident to consider signing up to become an organ donor this year.
“This is the perfect time of year to Discover the facts about organ and tissue donation, Decide to become an organ and tissue donor and Discuss your decision with your family and friends,” Mrs Davison said.
“Signing up to be an organ donor is simple, and potentially a way of helping others in need.
“Recently the Forum invited Hunter New England Health Organ and Tissue Donation Co-ordinator Sarah Gordon, who is based at Tamworth, to speak to us about organ donation.
“Sarah was appointed in November to give New England residents access to local support and guidance when considering organ and tissue donation.
“We were surprised to learn that organ donation is not exclusive to young, healthy people. Donors can be of any age and health, so don’t assume that just because you haven’t led an ideal lifestyle that your organs won’t be suitable for donation.
“In the event that you die and become and organ donor, your organs can help save the lives of up to ten people – which is one of the most precious donations you can make.
“Donation of organs and tissue can save or improve the life of the 1700 people who are waiting for an organ or tissue transplant on the National Organ and Tissue Waiting List,” Mrs Davison said
HNE Health hospitals have the capability to accept more organ and tissue donations, but potential donors are often unregistered to donate their organs, or have not spoken to their families about donating their organs.
“You can become an organ donor by calling 1800 777 203, by filling out a form at any Medicare office or by registering with the Australian Organ Donor Register online. You may also display that you are a potential donor on your RTA driver’s licence,” Mrs Davison said. “Once you’ve done this it’s very important to talk to your family or carer about your wishes.”
For more information about how you or a loved one can save a life through organ or tissue donation go to www.donatelife.gov.au or call 1800 777 203.
