New dialysis machines, outreach service at Muswellbrook

12 April 2010

Dialysis patients at Muswellbrook District Hospital are benefitting from three new state-of-the-art dialysis machines recently installed in the hospital’s dialysis unit.

The machines are used to treat patients with renal disease who require regular dialysis treatments.

Renal Registered Nurse Meagan Mannering said the machines are capable of providing advanced methods of dialysis, and also improve the monitoring of patients during treatment.

“These sophisticated machines are at the cutting edge of technology, which greatly improves dialysis for the patients, and also makes day-to-day work for staff more exciting,” Ms Mannering said.

“Any technology that considers the needs of the patient and improves their health outcomes is always welcomed.”

Dialysis treatment replaces the function of the kidneys, which normally serve as the body's natural filtration system.

Through the use of a blood filter and a chemical solution known as dialysate, the treatment removes waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream, while maintaining the proper chemical balance of the blood.

The three Fresenius haemodialysis machines were installed in Muswellbrook District Hospital’s dialysis unit in December 2009.

Upper Hunter residents who use home dialysis therapies have also benefitted from a recent boost to services.

The team from Muswellbrook District Hospital’s dialysis unit now provide monthly outreach assistance to home dialysis patients in the region.

Staff visit patients in their homes to ensure their dialysis technique is on-track. They also make sure patients are feeling well and are receiving the best possible health support.

The outreach service started in November last year, with the Muswellbrook hospital team receiving ongoing support from staff at Newcastle’s Wansey Centre.

Nurse Midwife Manager at Muswellbrook District Health Service, Wendy Hordern, said the monthly outreach service was running extremely well.

“Not only has the new service ensured home dialysis patients in the Upper Hunter receive excellent patient care, but our dialysis team have also been able to expand their skills base which is great,” she said.
