Merv Hughes set to bowl them over in Tamworth

6 April 2010

Merv Hughes – cricket legend and Ambassador for Andrology Australia* – will visit Tamworth in May to spin a few yarns, pitch a few tales and deliver some important messages about men’s health.

The former Australian cricketer and sporting icon will be special guest speaker at a FREE evening to promote men’s health on Thursday 13 May at the Longyard Hotel.

‘An Evening with Merv’ is a free event open to men of all ages and includes dinner. Although it is free, bookings are essential and can be made now by contacting 6766 1394 (group bookings welcomed).

The event is being supported by Hunter New England Health, North West Slopes Division of General Practice, Department of Industry and Investment, Anglican Counselling, Andrology Australia and The Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health.

Kate Arndell, Mental Health Drought Worker with Hunter New England Health, said the relaxed dinner and evening will be an opportunity for local blokes to catch-up with a few mates, have a laugh and learn how to look after themselves.

“Merv Hughes is Ambassador for Andrology Australia and will provide a gutsy, no-nonsense discussion on men’s health – as well as some humorous sporting anecdotes,” Ms Arndell said.

“Men often spend money and time looking after their cars and machinery but sometimes neglect to look after themselves. This night will be an opportunity to learn how to look at men’s health and come away with some new ideas to maintain health and well-being”.

North West Slopes Division of General Practice Program Manager, Robyn Cathcart said Hughes would talk about men’s health, well-being and attitudes towards health.

“It is exciting for Tamworth to have such a motivational and iconic Australian to visit the area and speak about such an important issue,” Mrs Cathcart said.

When: Thursday 13 May at 5.30pm (those not wishing to attend the free dinner are still encouraged to come and hear the speakers at 7.15pm)
Where: The Longyard Hotel, Ringers Road, Tamworth
