Cancer pamper program open to the fellas

28 April 2010

Armidale Community Health is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Look Good, Feel Better program this week - with a twist.

Look Good, Feel Better is a free community service program dedicated to helping women undergoing treatment for cancer. The purpose of the program is to help them manage the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, thereby helping to restore their appearance and self image.

Armidale Community Health Manager Marilyn McCarthy said the successful program was usually a ladies’ day, but staff at Armidale Community Health have expanded the program to include a workshop program for men.

“We usually run three workshops a year for women, focussing on how women can continue to enjoy their appearance despite the effects of some cancer treatments such as loss of hair,” Mrs McCarthy said.

“The workshops usually focus on hair loss, makeup and skin care for the ladies, but we have also designed a workshop to get the blokes together and learn a few things about skin care and shaving.

“At first the men were a little apprehensive about coming to a ‘beauty workshop’ but once they’re here they find they enjoy learning how to take care of their appearance.”

Mrs McCarthy said the men’s workshop was an ideal way to recognise the success of the Look Good, Feel Better program and the success the staff at Armidale Community Health have had in expanding the program to include men too.

Media are welcome to attend the Look Good, Feel Better celebration at 11am on Monday 3 May in Armidale Community Health’s Conference Room 1.
