New Organ Donation nurse for the Hunter

Hunter residents now have access to additional local support and guidance when considering organ and tissue donation thanks to the appointment of another dedicated full-time Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Jeanette Lacey will be based at John Hunter Hospital with existing coordinator Nicole Coleman, on-hand to get residents in the Hunter region thinking about how they can save lives by donating their organs.

“My role will be to raise awareness and provide education about organ and tissue donation for both the community and hospital staff who come into contact with potential donors and their families,” Ms Lacey said.

“I will also be present at the hospital during organ donation procedures to support the families of patients that have made the generous decision to donate life.

John Hunter Hospital has the capability to accept more organ and tissue donations, but potential donors are often unregistered to donate their organs, or have not spoken to their families about donating their organs.

“You can become an organ donor by calling 1800 777 203, by filling out a form at any Medicare office or by registering with the Australian Organ Donor Register online. You may also select to nominate that you are a potential donor on your RTA driver’s license.  Once you’ve done this it’s very important to talk to your family or carer about your wishes.

“After having this discussion with your family it is also possible to become a “Donatelife™ family, a family who are aware of each other’s wishes regarding organ donation,” she said.

Ms Lacey said donation of organs and tissue can save or improve the life of the 1700 people who are waiting for an organ or tissue transplant on the National Organ and Tissue Waiting List.

“In the event that you die and become an organ donor, your organs can help save the lives of up to ten people – this is one of the most precious donations you can make,” Ms Lacey said.

The most important thing you can do is Discover the facts about organ and tissue donation, Decide to become and organ and tissue donor and Discuss your decision with your family and friends.”
