John Hunter nurse showcases life changing work

NSW Senior Australian of the year and John Hunter Hospital Theatre Nurse Lyn Sollner Thorpe will showcase her life changing work providing medical aid and health care in developing countries at a photo exhibition at John Hunter Hospital.

The exhibition, Changing Faces-Making Dreams Real, features images of children and elderly people who Lyn has assisted on her many missions to third world countries as part of a medical team.

Lyn undertakes two or three missions a year to provide much needed health care to those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to it. Her most recent trip was to Wenzhou, China where she assisted in performing 152 cleft lip or palette corrections.

“The change in children who have had their cleft lips repaired is amazing. It allows them to go back into the community and live a more normal life,” Lyn said.

“It has been a privilege to volunteer for these projects and something I am very passionate about. We all have the right to access good and proper health care, education and a safe environment.

“We have the power to make a real difference in making these dreams come true and I hope I have captured this in the images I have taken on the missions,” she said.

General Manager of the Greater Newcastle Acute Hospital Network Todd McEwan said John Hunter Hospital was extremely fortunate to have Lyn working in the operating theatre.

“We are proud to call Lyn a member of our team. She exemplifies the difference that one person can make to the lives of many when they dedicate their lives to helping those less fortunate than themselves,” Todd said.

“We congratulate Lyn on her achievements and I encourage people to come to the hospital to see her exhibition and help celebrate the improved lives of all the people she has helped.”

Changing Faces-Making Dreams Real is on display at the Royal Newcastle Centre until the beginning of February as part of the John Hunter Hospital Arts for Health Program.
