Parking changes for hospital

Further parking restrictions come into place at The Maitland Hospital from this week as work on a $10 million redevelopment moves into its next phase.

The current ambulance bays and vehicle access will be fenced off while the area is rebuilt and NO PARKING will be possible there.

Temporary ambulance bays have been constructed under the covered walkway entry to the hospital.

The hospital’s Acting General Manager Karen Kelly said temporary emergency parking and drop-off measures have been introduced to help alleviate inconvenience for visitors.

“For 12 weeks only, people needing to make emergency drop-offs will be able to use the taxi zone at the front of the hospital near the pedestrian crossing,” Ms Kelly said.

Additional drop-off and short-term parking has been made available at the nearby Melbee car park, near Mt Pleasant Street, and also in the hospital’s main car park across High Street (with its entrance off Bonar Street).

“The temporary use of the taxi zone will be for 10-minute parking only and the space will also be used as required by police and emergency vehicles,” she said.

“Maitland City Council has kindly allowed us to use this area, but it will only be for 12 weeks until the new ambulance bays and access entry are constructed.”

The new ambulance bays are part of a $10million redevelopment that will nearly double the size of the existing emergency department and also provide a new front entry, waiting area and admissions area.

Ms Kelly said disruption and inconvenience would be unavoidable and asked for the public’s co-operation.

“These are temporary but necessary measures and we are asking the community of Maitland and the surrounding areas for their patience and co-operation as we work through each phase of the redevelopment as quickly as possible.

“In approximately 18 months, Maitland will have a new emergency department almost double the size of the existing one and with additional treatment spaces that will help us meet the acute health needs of a rapidly growing community.”
