John Hunter Hospital shows support for Fair Dinkum Sailors

Staff at John Hunter Hospital’s Acute Stroke Service are encouraging the community to support the ‘Fair Dinkum’ Sailing Crew as they sail around Australia to raise money for the National Stroke Foundation.

The Fair Dinkum Sailing crew, lead by Captain Gerry Ryan will arrive at Newcastle harbour this Saturday as part of their voyage which commenced on 11 April 2009 with the aim to raise $300,000 for the worthy cause.

Director of Acute Stroke Services at John Hunter Hospital Professor Chris Levi said he encouraged everyone in the Hunter to get behind the crew to raise money for the National Stroke Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which works with the public, government, health professionals, patients, carers and stroke survivors to reduce the impact of Stroke on the Australian Community.

“Stroke is the second leading cause of death in Australia and a common cause of disability, with 630 people dying from stroke in the Hunter New England area and more than 2,200 hospitalised each year,” Professor Levi said.

“Stroke affects many people in our local community so I ask everyone to consider showing their support to the Fair Dinkum Sailing Crew by donating.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the crew on their achievements so far and wish them all the best for the remainder of the voyage,” Professor Levi said.
