The donation will allow for the purchase of a new Bipap Machine for the hospital which will assist those suffering from respiratory illnesses including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which causes breathing problems.
General Manager of the Greater Newcastle Acute Hospital Network Todd McEwan said the purchase of the machine was a great outcome for respiratory patients in the Hunter because the machine decreases the risk of complications such as pneumonia arising as a result of their illness and lessens the time the patient needs to stay in hospital.
“The Bipap Machine assists the user to breath and improves the function of the heart and lungs at the same time. It will also assist patients suffering from neurone disease, muscular dystrophy and scoliosis,” Mr McEwan said.
“We are extremely grateful to the Charlestown Lions Club and Australian Lions Foundation for their ongoing support of our hospital and their efforts in fundraising for the equipment.”
Charlestown Lions Club President Ron Way said all 23 members of the Charlestown Lions Club had been dedicated in their support for raising money for the new machine.
“Locally, the Charlestown Lions Club raised $14,000 towards the Bipap Machine and we were successful in applying for a grant from the Australian Lions Foundation for another $6,000,”
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported our barbeques that we have held throughout the year and our members for their enthusiastic support of the project.
