Glen Innes expo to promote Seniors Week

16 March 2009

Staff at Glen Innes Community Health Centre are encouraging older people to maintain their independence by raising awareness during NSW Seniors Week.
The community health team will be participating in the Seniors Expo at the Glen Innes Returned Services Club on Thursday 19 March, between 10am and 2.30pm.

Speech Pathologist Katherine Cribb said people of all ages valued their independence, however, older people and their carers sometimes needed extra support to maintain this way of life.

“Health and independence can have a great impact on a person’s enjoyment of life. Maximising independence in our seniors by highlighting the range of community health support services available is an important aspect of our role,” Ms Cribb said.

“Many staff at Glen Innes Community Health Centre enjoy frequent involvement with those in our community who are much wiser, and sometimes a bit greyer. Whenever we can, we like to encourage seniors to seek home-based support and use services that can help keep them fit and active.”

Members of the community health team will be available at the Glen Innes Seniors Expo to discuss services and offer assistance and advice.

The expo will run in conjunction with the Mayoral Awards, and will feature entertainment, morning tea and lunch. There is a $10 entry cost.

NSW Seniors Week runs from 15 to 22 March. With more than 500 events planned under the ‘Live Life’ banner, it is one of the biggest celebrations for seniors in the southern hemisphere.

Seniors Week is an initiative of State Governments, and in NSW the event receives support from DADHC. It also receives significant funding from Local Governments and their communities. The week is designed to thank and recognise older people across the state for the contributions they provide to the community.
