A Christmas Fit for Kids

18 December 2009

With around one in four kids in the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast areas now overweight or obese, the need to encourage all children to be physically active has become a key health issue for parents and families.
Dr John Wiggers, Program Director Good for Kids. Good for Life, said Christmas is the perfect time to be smart about the presents we choose for kids.

“While electronic gadgets like computer games are popular they lead to inactive behaviour, plus you have to keep spending to replace batteries or to get the latest software or game,” Dr Wiggers said.

“Active gifts will not only give kids endless hours of fun and help to keep them active and fit, but more importantly, they are a great way for kids to develop coordination and movement skills that will last a lifetime.”

Research from the Good for Kids program has found that kids in our region are not getting nearly enough physical activity each day, with only half of kids aged between two and 15 meeting recommendations.

“Kids need at least one hour of activity that makes them huff and puff every day, and they should spend no more than two hours a day playing in front of a screen, whether it be TV, playing the computer or video games.” Dr Wiggers said.

Fun and active gift ideas for kids of all ages this Christmas include;
• balls (basketballs, footballs, netballs, soccer balls)
• beach gear (eg boogie boards), snorkelling gear
• frisbees
• hula hoops, skipping ropes, pavement chalk
• bikes, scooters and skateboards
• cricket sets
• sandboxes, swings, trampolines

“Families can also get active together with backyard cricket, swimming and walks around the neighbourhood together to see Christmas lights,” Dr Wiggers said.
