Frank has new lease on life thanks to speechies
24 August 2009
No-one knows about the value of a caring, dedicated speech pathologist better than Tamworth couple Frank and Judith Hollenberg.
This week, Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August), Frank and Judith are happy to help the Tamworth Hospital speech pathologists spread the word about the importance of being able to speak well and where to go for help if you have difficulty communicating with the world.
Frank has coped with Parkinson’s Disease for a while, although following a stroke in 2007 and spinal surgery in 2008, the effects of all three ailments compounded and he found that it was becoming increasingly difficult to communicate with his loved ones.
“Earlier this year I realised voice was very soft and that it was becoming harder to pronounce words,” Frank said.
“Family and friends couldn’t always understand me, so I knew it was time to see what help was available.”
Frank made an appointment to see the speech pathologists at Tamworth Hospital, and underwent intensive voice therapy to increase the loudness of his voice and improve his ability to participate in conversation.
Frank’s wife Judith said since her husband sought help, he had become more aware of the need to concentrate on speaking loudly and clearly.
“Before he began having speech therapy he was limiting himself to speaking only when absolutely necessary,” Judith said.
“He’s far more aware of his audience now, and he’s back to his old self and able to have everyday conversations again.”
Tamworth Hospital speech pathologist Kate McInnes said Frank was a good example of how a person could greatly improve their day-to-day living by seeking the help of a speech pathologist.
“It’s great that Frank recognised that his speech was effecting his participation in conversations and he has worked hard to improve his ability to communicate effectively with others,” Kate said.
“We provide assistance to people in hospitals, nursing homes and in the community to maximise their ability to communicate with others - a doctor’s referral is not required.”
