Wheels are in motion at Weidman Wing Day Respite Centre

A new bus will arrive at the Muswellbrook Community Health Service this week bringing with it a renewed sense of freedom for the 30 clients who visit the Weidman Wing Day Respite Centre each week.

Not only will the elderly and special needs clients have a transport service which can pick them up from their doorstep and drop them home, but the group has worked tirelessly to raise the funds to buy the new bus themselves.

Co-ordinator of the Weidman Wing Day Respite Centre Charlie Thomas said the day clients have been donating $3 each time they visit the centre for the past decade or more.

“The clients have been very patient and over the years, the money has added up and now we have a new $45,000 vehicle,” Ms Thomas said.

The centres’ current mode of transport was donated back in the 1990’s and is well past its use by date. The new addition will definitely be welcomed with open arms, seating approximately 10 people and fully equipped with wheelchair access.

“It’s important to assure our house-bound clients that there is an easily accessible transport system so they can attend the Weidman Wing Day Respite Centre. We will also be able to take groups on local outings or day trips to Maitland, Tamworth or Singleton,” she said.

“The clients are so happy. They are very proud of themselves for raising the money and seeing the results of their hard work by buying the new bus – something they will use for many kilometres to come,” she said.

Photo opportunities are available at the Weidman Wing Respite Day Centre, TOMORROW, 28 October at 11am.

 Media are invited to attend.
