Helping women face cancer with confidence
9 October 2008
Coping with the physical side-effects of cancer treatment can be difficult and confronting for many cancer patients.
On Monday 13 October, Armidale Community Health Centre will once again host a session of the Look Good Feel Better program, a two-hour workshop designed to help women living with cancer improve their appearance and self esteem.
Under the guidance of experienced and specially trained volunteers, women will be shown how to deal with changes that may occur during their treatment.
Through the use of skincare, make-up, wigs, turbans, hats and other accessories, workshop participants will be tutored in how to combat loss of hair, eyebrows and lashes, redness and dryness of the skin, and facial weight gain or loss.
Participants receive a complimentary set of skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry as part of the free community service event, according to Clinical Nurse Specialist Marilyn McCarthy.
“The Armidale Look Good Feel Better program runs four times a year, with one of the days specifically targeted towards men facing cancer,” Mrs McCarthy said.
“This program teaches participants how to care for their skin during the treatment phase. It is a free service, coordinated by experienced volunteers, who give of their time to help boost self esteem and build confidence during cancer treatment.”
NSW Look Good Feel Better Regional Manager, Joanne Meehan, will attend the October workshop at Armidale Community Health Centre, to show her support for the program and its participants.
Women who are interested in attending the free workshop may register by contacting Jo Bindly on 6776 9696 or Marilyn McCarthy on 6776 9771.
