Gunnedah Play Space – we have lift-off!

13 November 2008

Gunnedah children can now blast off into space - Play Space that is.

Play Space is a space-themed room at Gunnedah Community Health set aside for a range of children’s therapies, such as speech pathology, occupational therapy, psychology and social work.

The room features two large space-themed paintings kindly donated by Quirindi artist, Ann Easton, and a range of toys and activities.

Gunnedah Community Health Registered Psychologist Laura Summerfield said the room would provide the ideal surroundings in which to work with children from the Gunnedah area.

“This room is a great way to engage young people as we work with them,” Laura said.

“We used to work with the children in our offices, which wasn’t the most stimulating setting, so it’s great to have this room to ourselves.”

By using the Play Space, community health staff will be able to engage children in assessment and therapy tasks through play, talk, movement, creativity and problem solving.

“Now that we have a dedicated room with a Space theme, children will benefit and have much more fun in their contact with us,” Laura said.

The Play Space is located within the Medical Centre in the grounds of the Gunnedah Health Service. It is recognised by the large golden star on the door, and a special name plate also designed by Ann Easton.

The official Play Space launch will be held at 1pm on Tuesday 18 November, with brief introductions on the use of the space by staff from Gunnedah Community Health.

A celebratory cake will also be cut to mark blast-off.

Media are invited to attend the opening for interviews and photos/footage.
