Nurses share secrets for better patient care

12 May 2008

Tamworth will host a bevy of Hunter New England Health’s nurses and midwives tomorrow (Tuesday 13 May), in town to take part in the fourth annual Innovations in Clinical Practice Showcase.

Hunter New England Health’s Nurse Manager of Clinical Practice Catherine Turner said the annual event, held as an International Nurses Day (12 May) event, is leading the way in promoting innovation and best practice amongst the Area’s nursing and midwifery workforce.

“We have an excellent line up of presenters this year including Professor Donald MacLellan, NSW Health’s Area Performance Manager. Prof McLellan, who is also NSW Health’s State Program Director of Surgery, will speak about partnerships between doctors and nurses,” Ms Turner said.

“This event has become an excellent way for our nursing and midwifery staff to come together from all over the Area to share ideas and learn from each other about new and improved ways of delivering care to patients in our region.

“Our nurses are among the most innovative and forward thinking in the state. Their desire to test the boundaries and revise their approach to their work is redefining models of care for patients in some areas – with excellent results,” Ms Turner said.

Showcase presentations will be made on the following topics:

• Refugee Health Nursing in Rural Settings
• Tuning Into a Little Nurse Music
• Nursing Management of the Deteriorating Patient in a Rural Hospital
• Testicular Examination
• H.U.S.H - helping mothers and babies to succeed at breastfeeding
• Responding to the Voice of the Patient: Advancing the Enablement Philosophy
• The Journey of the Greater Newcastle Cluster Wound Management Model
• Improving outcomes for patients with Osteoporosis in those aged over 50 years who present with a fracture through early recognition and management.

• Bowel Management

The Innovations in Clinical Practice Showcase will be held at the Tamworth Towers tomorrow (Tuesday 13 May).
