Influx of new nurses at Tamworth Hospital
11 March,2008
Tamworth Hospital nursing numbers have been given a significant boost this month, with the acceptance of 17 new nurse graduates.
Tamworth Hospital Director of Nursing Chris Coombs said there had been an influx of graduates who applied to work at Tamworth Hospital this year, and given the hospital had a number of open vacancies accepted 17 instead of the usual 12 that were employed each February.
“This year we are proud to accept more newly-graduated Registered Nurses than we have in more than 20 years,” Mrs Coombs said.
“They have provided a significant boost to nursing numbers at Tamworth Hospital and we hope that by showing them the rewards of working within such a dedicated hospital that they will become long-term employees of Hunter New England Health.”
The graduates will work on a 12-month rotating roster through the hospital, allowing them to experience a wide variety of nursing practice, including time in the emergency department, mental health, intensive care and children’s ward.
New nurse graduate Michelle Rafferty began working at Tamworth Hospital in February after graduating from the University of New England in Armidale.
Originally from Tamworth, Michelle said it was a dream come true that she could follow her career without having to move away.
“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse and being able to work in such a dedicated nursing team in my home town has been amazing,” Michelle said.
“I spent time at Tamworth Hospital in my final year of university and I had such a good experience I really wanted to come back.
“The staff here are wonderful role models and the support I’ve received here has given me the confidence to step up and take responsibility as a fully-fledged Registered Nurse.”
Michelle and Chris Coombs will be available for interviews today (Wednesday 12 March) between 1.30 and 3pm.
