Emmaville secures GP support
5 March 2008 The recruitment of a new General Practitioner to Tenterfield will benefit smaller centres in the region, such as Emmaville, with outreach care to be provided on a weekly basis from next Tuesday (18 March). Dr John Liu will provide a weekly clinic, based at Vegetable Creek Multi Purpose Service, while recruitment efforts continue for a full time General Practitioner to be based at Emmaville. Director of Tenterfield Medical Centre Kerry Swain, visited Emmaville last weekend with Dr Liu and said the visiting GP was very impressed with the local health facilities. "Dr Liu was very pleased with the calm surroundings of the Vegetable Creek Multi Purpose Service and the adjacent rooms available to a General Practitioner," Mrs Swain said. "Dr Liu is keen to stay in Tenterfield, wanting a quieter life for his family than what they had in Sydney. He really likes the area and is looking forward to making it his home," she said. Originally from China, Dr Liu has lived and worked in Australia since 1988, with general practice experience in Forbes and Bathurst, and most recently working in a Sydney emergency department. Mrs Swain said Dr Liu comes to the area with a lot of experience and skills, and while he builds up his practice at the Tenterfield Medical Centre, is quite happy to help out at Emmaville. Tablelands Cluster Manager Wendy Mulligan said the health service was appreciative of the support offered by Dr Liu and the Tenterfield Medical Centre while recruitment continues for full time services at Emmaville. "Recruitment for a permanent GP for the Emmaville area is well underway, but we have to be realistic in the sense that there is shortage of GPs across Australia, and it is unknown just how long the recruitment process will take," Mrs Mulligan said. "Having this support helps to take the pressure off health service staff, existing doctors at Glen Innes who are already working tirelessly, and the Emmaville community. This temporary solution is a win all round," she said. Appointments will be available for community members at Vegetable Creek MPS every Tuesday, commencing Tuesday 18 March. Community members should call Vegetable Creek MPS on (02) 6734 7900 to arrange an appointment.
