Cook up a storm for John Hunter Hospital
Manager of Volunteer Services Vicki Dunn said the volunteers, known as the John Hunter Site Carers, decided to compile all their tried and tested recipes into a cookbook for the community to enjoy while also raising much needed funds for the hospital.
“The Old Chooks Cookbook is jammed packed with recipes for delicious meals and tasty treats. We have created a cook book with something for everyone with everything from old favourites to modern cuisine featured in the book,” Ms Dunn said.
“The cookbook is also full of wisdom for those who are new to cooking with our volunteers providing handy hints and conversion guides to help even the most inexperienced cooks.
“At this time of year many people are trying to find Secret Santa gifts to exchange with friends and colleagues. The Old Chooks Cookbook is the perfect solution, at $10 it is inexpensive and yet it is something people can use everyday,’ Ms Dunn said.
General Manager Greater Newcastle Acute Hospital Network Todd McEwan said that the cookbook was another example of the dedication the volunteers put into raising funds for the hospital.

“The John Hunter Site Carers selflessly dedicate their time and energy to raise funds to support our hospital. As well as their financial contribution, our volunteers also play a large part in contributing to the care and comfort of patients and their families through many different services including booking accommodation for relatives, delivering newspapers to wards and running the gift shop.”
The Cookbook will be launched in the foyer of the Royal Newcastle Centre at an event called Stirring the Pot as part of celebrations for International Volunteer Day.
Ms Dunn said the event will acknowledge the contribution the volunteers make to the hospital and will involve the official opening of an art exhibition called Portraits of our Treasures.
“Portraits of our Treasures is the work of one of our volunteers, Dudley Lewis and features beautiful pencil drawings of some of our volunteers,” Ms Dunn said.
