Teenage parties - don’t learn the hard way (Inverell)
11 September 2007
Mark Thursday 20 September on your calendar, so that you don’t miss the community information evening ‘Getting Your Head Around Teenage Parties’. With the end of the school year approaching, this not be missed event will feature a number of presentations on how to stay within the law and also being prepared for just about anything that might happen.
The parent/family information session to be held in the Hann Gallery at MacIntyre High School stating at 6pm, is open to all people and has speakers from Hunter New England Health, Police School Liaison and the Department of Community Services, dealing with issues such as:
• drug use and how to talk to young people about these issues
• preparing for a party and ‘Safe Party Packs’
• the law when it comes to alcohol use
• protecting yourself sexually
• negotiating young people/adult agreements that everyone can live with.
Special guest speaker, Roger Snaith from the Sydney based group ‘Enough is Enough’ will also be speaking on responsible driving, drawing on his personal experience of his own 17 year old daughter being killed by a drunk and drugged driver.
Mr Snaith co-founded the division of ‘Enough is Enough’ which deals with assisting and educating victims and offenders of road trauma and runs his own Business and Behaviour Management Consultancy.
During the day, Year 12 students of MacIntyre and Inverell High will also have the opportunity to hear from Roger Snaith, learning more about what they can do to protect themselves and their friends, when it comes to safe driving and keeping safe.
Coordinator of the event, Primary Health Care Nurse, Tania Mills, said they are very fortunate to have Roger Snaith coming to the area.
“He is a very interesting speaker, who is not heavy handed, but encourages young people to learn from other peoples mistakes, so they don’t have to make mistakes themselves.
“Young lives are too important to mess around with,” she said.
Roger Snaith will also be speaking to students at Glen Innes High and Ashford Central School on Friday 21 September.
