Precautions taken at Moree District Health Service

As a precaution, Hunter New England Health is advising the community that traces of asbestos fibre were detected in some restricted access areas at Moree District Health Service earlier this week.

Mehi Cluster General Manager David Quirk said the removal of the material would be managed appropriately.

“Traces of asbestos were found within restricted access areas at Moree District Health Service. This area is not accessible by patients or members of the public, and the area has since been sealed from the rest of the facility,” Mr Quirk said.

The area, which includes the health service basement, plant room, and ceiling cavity, has since been sealed to prevent the spread of airborne fibres.

Hunter New England Health has worked with an independent environmental consultant to undertake sample testing of the site, and surrounding areas inside the hospital.

“During this time, there will be no interruptions to service or care provided at Moree District Health Service. The removal will be undertaken safely and appropriately by licensed specialists,” Mr Quirk said.

“Patient care and safety is our number one priority and we will not allow that safety to be compromised,” he said.

Hunter New England Health is awaiting the results of a full report undertaken by an environmental consultant into the discovery.
