New obstetrician for Tamworth

Obstetric services in the area have been boosted with the appointment this month of Dr Kishor Singh to Tamworth Hospital.

Tamworth/Armidale Hospitals General Manager Fergus Fitzsimons was pleased to announce the recruitment of the new staff specialist which, with the recent appointment of Dr Andrew Ansari, brings the number of obstetricians in Tamworth to four.

“Dr Singh’s appointment is a demonstration of the commitment we have to building specialist services in this area.  This is great news for the community as well as the health service and we are pleased to welcome him to Tamworth,” Mr Fitzsimons said.

Dr Singh comes to Tamworth with an extensive background in medicine of 27 years, including more than 21 years as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Originally from India, Dr Singh has worked as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as a University Professor throughout his career, most recently in Fiji. Dr Singh has a special interest in Gynaecologic oncology.

Dr Singh and his wife, Dr Sudeshna Deb Barman, are settling into life in Tamworth.

“Ever since my specialisation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology 25 years ago, it has been my desire to work in a rural area when I become 50 plus,” Dr Sing said.

“But I do not wish to compromise my skills for lack of facility, which can be the case in rural areas. After a considerable search my dream has become a reality here in Tamworth.

“It has everything, adequate facility, marvelous colleagues and staff and above all, students with whom I can sustain my passion of teaching.”

Dr Singh said he was enjoying picking up the Australian accent and culture and was particularly looking forward to the Country Music Festival.

Mr Fitzsimons recognised the collaboration of Tamworth Health Service, Tamworth Medical Staff Council, North West Slopes Division of GPs and Peter Draper, Member for Tamworth to secure Dr Singh’s appointment.
