New face for Gunnedah and Quirindi
Professionals in the medical field can be hard to find in rural areas, so the appointment of a new Intern Psychologist to Gunnedah and Quirindi Community Health Centres is great news for the health service and community.
Laura Summerfield is happy to be settling into her new job with community health following her recent appointment. Ms Summerfield has a diverse career background, including time working in community and performing arts as well as in education and careers-related positions.
“My children were all grown up and living independently, so I took a look at my existing academic qualifications and career goals and decided to complete my psychology training,” she explained.
“I had been employed for five years as a careers and employment adviser, assisting students in secondary schools, when I decided to make the change. I was also a trained secondary teacher, with additional experience in working with young children through music and drama.”
“Working in local schools, helping young people to make the transition out of school and into work or further training was worthwhile work, but I wanted to be able to contribute on a deeper level,” she said.
Ms Summerfield said she had always been interested in the life journey of individuals.
“What influences them to take the direction that they do? What happens when they reach points of transition or crisis?
“My own journey has been full of challenge as well as opportunity. I wanted to learn more so I could be of more help to others. I wanted to help adults as well as young people,” she said.
So Ms Summerfield decided to complete her training as a psychologist and is now into the second year of her internship.
In her work with Gunnedah and Quirindi Community Health, Ms Summerfield will be working with adults as well as young people. She will be working in Gunnedah for three days per week and in Quirindi for two days per week. Referrals to the Intern Psychologist are accepted from individuals, local medical practitioners, allied health professionals, and other community service organisations.
Those wanting to make a referral or an appointment with the Intern Psychologist should ring the Gunnedah Community Health Centre on
