Visiting Dietitian helps to take challenge out of healthy eating

If you are interested in having a healthy lifestyle, you are invited to make an appointment with Hunter New England Health’s dietitian, Ailsa Liffman, who visits Tenterfield and Glen Innes helping people find practical ways to improve their wellness through nutrition.

Ailsa Liffman, the Dietitian based at Inverell Community Health, provides monthly visits to Tenterfield and visits Glen Innes once or twice each month depending on demand.

Nutrition is relevant to people of all ages and sizes, and Ailsa says there is no need to have a doctor’s referral to make an appointment.

"People come for help with a variety of medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart problems and weight problems, but there are also healthy people who simply want to improve their wellness through nutrition.

"For example, seeing a dietitian can assist people to learn about fats and sugars hidden in everyday foods, to help them improve their food choices.

"A dietitian can also help with allergies, food intolerance, coeliac disease, indigestion, bowel problems and even kidney disease.

"Getting children to eat healthy foods can be a challenge for any parent, but having some ideas for a healthy school lunch is a good start. I am happy to discuss all sorts of food issues with people," she said.

Ailsa said people are often reluctant to see a dietitian because they are worried about the changes they might be asked to consider.

"But what we do is give people choices that they may not have considered in the past. The changes need to be practical.

"We want to give people the information they need to help them ‘manage’ their dietary problems on their own.

"With the advantage of better ideas, strategies and information it is much easier to enjoy a healthy lifestyle in the context of your other commitments, both now and in the future,’ she said.
