Teaching and learning from each other
Hunter New England Health is inviting interested women from the Tamworth region to take part in a short peer education program.
The course, which is run in partnership with TAFE NSW, is designed for women who have come from a migrant background who want to increase their skills and knowledge to help others.
Hunter New England Health’s Transcultural Rural and Remote Outreach Project Field Liaison Officer Sue Budden said peer education is about teaching and learning from each other about a variety of topics.
“Peer educators share their knowledge of Tamworth and living in Australia. They will offer support and encouragement to other migrants and refugees,” Sue said.
“Peer education is also about empowering individuals with knowledge so they can make better decisions for themselves and their community.”
Topics covered in the eight sessions include:
• Vocational skills training and adult education available through TAFE and Adult Community Education
• Employment opportunities and job-seeking skills
• Centrelink – what benefits are you entitled to?
• Cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills
• Physical and emotional wellbeing
• The role of a peer educator
• Health care and community services and how to access them
“It’s all about empowering people and communities through knowledge and education, so we’re inviting women who come from a migrant background from the local community to become involved,” Sue said.
“In addition to the information and knowledge, each participant will also gain TAFE accreditation.”
The course is free and will involve three hours each week for eight weeks, beginning on Wednesday 24 October 2007.
The course will be held at the New England Institute of TAFE NSW Tamworth Campus in Janison Street.
