Camp gives young carers a break and chance to have some fun
Young carers aged between eight and 12 will converge on Myuna Bay between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 October at a free young carers camp being hosted by Hunter New England Health’s EDuCARE Support Service.
The attendees are young people who regularly look after their parent, sibling, grandparent, relative or friend who needs assistance for daily living who may have a disability, chronic medical condition, mental health condition, drug and alcohol issue or frail aged.
The camp will give them a break from this role and give them a chance to meet other young people like themselves.
There are up to 170,000 people under the age of 18 in Australia who provide support for a family member who has a disability, drug or alcohol issues, a mental illness or other long-term illness. Sometimes young carers are the main carers.
“It’s clear there are many young people who are carers in our community, although this number is actually underestimated because many young carers remain hidden and are not always formally identified,” EDuCARE Support Service Manager Rose Blue said.
“The camp is fully supervised by adult volunteers and co-ordinated by EDuCARE Support Service, proudly sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of District 9670 and in collaboration with Life Activities,” Ms Blue said.
“There will be plenty of fun activities run by a program instructor and EDuCARE that includes sailing, canoeing, kayaking, archery and giant swing. There will also be opportunities for young carers to share their caring experiences with others in similar caring situations,” she said.
The camp is free, including accommodation and meals.
