Women's Wisdom: An exciting new resource
As part of the 16 days of Activism to Stop Violence Against Women* a new group work program will be officially launched by the social workers from the Greater Newcastle Cluster of Hunter New England Health to be made available to the wider community.
Women’s Wisdom was developed and written by local social workers Emma Bullen and Nicole Carter. It is a six-week group program for women of any age who have experienced a relationship that makes them feel bad.
The Community Health Social Work Service in Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and Port Stephens offers Women’s Wisdom groups on a regular basis.
The Women’s Wisdom program is now available for purchase locally and nationally by other health services, government and non-government organisations and will enable groups to be available more widely.
The launch will be held on Tuesday 20 November 2007.
Social worker Emma Bullen said the Women’s Wisdom groups run for six weeks and are for women of any age who have experienced a relationship that make them feel bad.
“The Women’s Wisdom group offers women the opportunity to increase their knowledge of abuse and power issues in relationships and increase their self-esteem in a supportive environment,” she said.
“We’re keen to share this program with other professionals and organisations.”
Senior Regional Strategies Officer for the NSW Strategy To Reduce Violence Against Women Jillian Meyers-Brittain has said about the Women’s Wisdom package: “Most interventions do not recognise the incredible strength, courage and survival skills utilised by women living with abuse. Drawing on many years of listening to Women with Wisdom, Emma and Nicole are to be congratulated for developing the tools to assist women to re-author their own stories.”
