Volunteers Thank You Luncheon

The generosity and goodwill of the volunteers who work within the John Hunter Hospital, Royal Newcastle Centre and John Hunter Children’s Hospital will be recognised at a luncheon held in their honour at West Leagues Club today.

Director of Clinical Services for the Greater Newcastle Acute Hospital Network Karen Kelly said the volunteer luncheon is an annual event to celebrate the many volunteers who dedicate countless hours to making a difference to patients and their families.

“More than 200 people representing 14 different volunteer organisations are attending this year’s thank you luncheon,” Ms Kelly said.

“Those volunteers who have contributed five, ten, fifteen and twenty years service will be awarded service certificates, and entertainment will be provided by Kim Hornby – many Newcastle people would know Kim as ‘Miss Kim’ from NBN Television.”

Two of the largest groups represented at the event will be the John Hunter Site Carers and the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club.

The Carers provide many different services, including booking on-site accommodation for relatives, running the gift shop, delivering newspapers and magazines to the wards, as well as fundraising through the sale of handcrafts and other projects.

The John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club is also an invaluable volunteer group that helps provide funding, equipment and support to sick children and their families.

Volunteers are an indispensable asset to Hunter New England Area Health Service, providing the driving force behind much needed fundraising initiatives and contributing to the care and comfort of patients and their families during often difficult times.
