Hunter hospitals receive patients from fire at building in Newcastle

Hunter New England Health hospitals are mobilising to treat 38 patients as a result of a fire in a building in the Newcastle CBD this morning.

At this stage, patients are being transported to John Hunter Hospital, Maitland, Belmont and Kurri Kurri hospitals, as well as to Calvary Mater Newcastle.

• 19 patients are being treated at John Hunter Hospital’s Emergency Department.
• 5 patients are being treated at The Maitland Hospital.
• 6 patients are being treated at the Mater Hospital.
• 6 patients are being treated at Belmont Hospital.
• 2 patients are being treated at Kurri Kurri Hospital.

They are all suffering from the effects of minor smoke inhalation and one patient is suffering from chest pains. However, all patients remain in a stable condition.

Our Emergency Department clinicians at the five hospitals are currently providing urgent treatment to those involved in this incident.
