Glen Innes babies welcomed by Friends of the Library

The local “Friends of the Library” group have pledged gifts for the next 12 months to all babies born at the hospital, hoping to introduce their families to the joys of reading.

All babies born will be presented with a library bag and their first baby book and an invitation to attend the “Baby Bounce” Storytelling sessions at the Public Library every second Wednesday.

President of the Friends of the Library, Shirley Edwards, said research has shown that children’s brains develop at a great rate during a read aloud session.

“It is important that children are read to from birth to five years of age when learning pathways are laid down in the brain,” she said.

Well known early childhood author Mem Fox promotes reading to children as an essential tool in providing young children with positive literacy experiences. The introduction of books at an early age increases vocabulary, extends concentration and promotes imagination.

Ms Edwards said the group was successful in gaining a grant from the NSW State Library to introduce the Baby Bounce and newborn baby gift program. She is hoping that the Friends of the Library will be successful in gaining more grant monies so the program can be continued in the future.

Glen Innes Health Service Manager, Cathryn Jones extended her appreciation to Ms Edwards for this innovative program, saying a big thank-you on behalf of all families of babies born in the next twelve months.

“Health services are very keen to promote healthy growth and development of young children, and this is a very practical and creative way to introduce families to the stimulating and life enhancing world of books,” she said.
