Families investing in time together
National Families Week 2007 will be held from Sunday 13 May to Saturday 19 May 2007, coinciding with the United Nations International Day of the Family (15 May) and Mother’s Day (13 May).
The theme for the week aims to encourage “FITT” families, or Families Investing in Time Together.
Child, Youth and Family Health Nurse for Hunter New England Health Debbie Armstrong said the central aim of National Families Week was to encourage all Australians to take time to do things together as a family.
“We are encouraging family groups to set aside some time to undertake activities that will improve the all-round physical and emotional wellbeing of the family unit,” Mrs Armstrong said.
“The emphasis of National Families Week is investing in family time, prompting individuals to remember that they are part of families and that the family unit itself needs special attention and care if it is to be strong.
“Between 13 and 19 May, invest some time to celebrate the vital role of your family and to do things to improve the all-round physical and emotional wellbeing of your family unit.
“Take time to go for a family picnic, have that game of backyard cricket you planned all summer, catch up with family and relatives for a walk in a local scenic spot, and spend some time talking and listening to all members of your family,” she said.
“We should invest in these activities all year round. Our families shape our character and values, and can be a strong support base to always draw inspiration and assistance from, providing we nurture and respect the family relationship,” Mrs Armstrong said.
