Softening the cancer journey

The Moree Quilter’s Group and Moree District Health Service Cancer Care Team have “stitched together” to create a display of support for cancer patients across the North-West.

Members of the Quilter’s Group have generously donated time, creativity and imagination to craft a number of soft and colourful cushions which the Health Service will pass on to cancer patients on behalf of the Moree community as a reminder of the support and love which is close at hand for individuals living with cancer.

Rural Cancer Care Co-ordinator for Moree District Health Service Narelle MacPherson said the gifts would serve as a reminder for patients that care is close at hand, from family, friends, and support agencies.

“We want our patients to remember that support is always close by in the Moree community,” Mrs MacPherson said.

“Members of the Moree Quilter’s Group were really enthusiastic to embrace this project when staff from the Health Service pitched the idea several months ago. Cancer Care Team staff will start gifting the cushions to cancer patients of Moree District Health Service over the coming months,” she said.

The Moree District Health Service Cancer Care Team comprises Rural Cancer Care Co-ordinator, Narelle MacPherson, Oncology Social Worker Jann Tuart and a team member from Palliative Care Nursing.

The Cancer Care Team is a new initiative of the Cancer Institute of NSW, and provides support to patients and their families during the cancer management process, from diagnosis and through any treatment that the patient might undergo.

“The role of the Cancer Care Co-ordinator is to facilitate the continuity and quality of care for patients diagnosed with cancer, and to provide support for the patient’s individual needs, as well as those of the patient’s family and carers,” Mrs MacPherson said.

“The Cancer Care Co-ordinator can explain treatment options, and provide written and verbal information about your treatment, as well as emotional support for the patient and family.

“We support multidisciplinary care, and ensure smooth communication between team members and other health professionals, including the patient’s General Practitioner,” she said.

A cancer patient at Moree District Health Service will also be supported by an Oncology Social Worker, who will assist in dealing with emotional and practical issues that arise in relation to cancer.

The Moree Quilter’s Group meets each Tuesday morning at 10.30am at the Masonic Hall, Moree.
