Singleton Hospital – 100-years-old and still going strong
Singleton Hospital is celebrating its centenary tomorrow Saturday 30 June, by holding a fair in the hospital grounds.
Lower Hunter Cluster General Manager Yvonne Patricks will be joining staff and the community at the official ceremony at 10.30am.
Ms Patricks said this was a major milestone for the hospital and the community of Singleton alike.
“The hospital is an integral part of any community. Since it opened on this current site in 1907, this hospital and its fine staff have provided quality healthcare and wellness to the community of Singleton and surrounding districts.”
“Over the past 100 years, Singleton Hospital has meant many things to many people,” Ms Patricks said.
In 1907 the hospital initially provided accommodation to just 20 patients in two wards. It had one operating theatre, an administration block and nurses’ bedrooms.
Today Singleton Hospital is a 53-bed acute care facility that provides a 24-hour Emergency Department, obstetrics, a high dependency unit, a palliative care service, medical and surgical wards, an operating theatre, a Day Surgery Unit, a Pathology service and Renal Dialysis.
It also has a range of allied health services such as physiotherapy, social work, occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetics and community nursing services.
The Singleton Hospital was officially opened on 22 June 1907 by the then New South Wales Premier, Mr Joseph Carruthers.
As part of the official ceremony Ms Patricks will present the original gold key to the hospital to the hospital manager Wendy Mason-Jones.
This key was handed over by the contractor, Mr H.P. Conolly, who built the hospital, to the then Premier of New South Wales, Mr Carruthers, in 1907.
Patrons of the Singleton Hospital Auxiliary Flo Drinan, Molly Crowe and Lola Robinson will cut a special centenary cake as part of the official proceedings.
The festivities will kick off at 9am and continue until around 3pm.
Celebrations will include:
• Performances by the Town Band, Singleton Pipes and Drums and Singleton school bands
• Historical display
• Royal Memorabilia display
• Westpac Rescue Helicopter
• Singleton Street Machines and Ulysses Bike Club
• Men’s health checks
• Food court
